The Americano is a true classic, first being served as far back as the 1860s in Gaspare Campari’s bar in Milan! Its name is a fond reference to the surge of American tourists who enjoyed its bitter-sweet flavour in the early 1900s. Before then, however, it was known as a ‘Milano-Torino’ due to its two main ingredients: Campari from Milan, and Cinzano Vermouth from Turin.

For those not used to the unusual bitterness of Campari, the Americano is a gentle introduction. As a further incentive to acquire a taste for this fine cocktail, bear in mind that it was the first drink ordered by James Bond in Ian Fleming’s series ‘Casino Royale’. He stipulates that Perrier should always be used for the soda water, as, in his opinion, expensive soda water is the cheapest way to improve a poor drink.
