This modern classic is popular worldwide, especially in many British Commonwealth countries, and is often described as Bermuda’s national drink. The cocktail gained popularity in the United States through the sailing community up and down the east coast, having been brought home by various sailors who frequented Bermuda. A well-known derivative of this cocktail is known as the ‘Turbo Dark ‘N’ Stormy’, a particularly strong combination mixed with ginger wine instead of ginger beer, and is a favourite tipple of the Pembroke College Boat Club at Oxford University.
To stay authentic, a Dark ‘N’ Stormy should actually contain Gosling’s Black Seal Rum. The drink was originally created using this brand, in Bermuda, and because Gosling’s is a small family-run business they made a legal copyright on the name of the cocktail and the recipe.
